Privacy Policy

Last updated: 1 November 2026

Crumbs is a language learning app with short stories. This policy explains what personal data the app and this website use, why, and what rights you have. We keep it to what the app needs.

Who is responsible

Aviles (Ruben Gonzalez Aviles), Zurich, Switzerland. Contact for anything about your data: support@readcrumbs.app

We follow the Swiss Federal Act on Data Protection (FADP) and, for users in the EU and UK, the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR).

What we collect and why

Your account

When you start, the app creates an account for you without asking for anything. It’s identified by a random ID. If you choose to sign in with Apple or Google (to keep your progress across devices), we receive the email address and name that Apple or Google share with us. With Apple, you can hide your real email address.

You can give yourself a display name and pick an avatar. Both are only shown inside the app.

Why: to provide the app and keep your progress. Legal basis: performance of our contract with you.

Your learning

To show you stories at your level and bring words back for review, we store what you do in the app: the languages you learn, the stories you read and how far you got, the words you save or mark as known, your review answers and schedule, your daily activity (for your streak and statistics), your settings, and your time zone (so your day starts at your midnight).

Why: this is the app itself. Legal basis: performance of our contract with you.

Notifications

If you allow notifications, your device’s push token is stored with your account. Daily reminders are scheduled on your device.

Why: to send you the reminders you asked for. Legal basis: your consent, which you can withdraw at any time in your phone’s settings.

Subscriptions

Crumbs+ is bought through the App Store or Google Play. We never see your payment details. Apple or Google, and the service that manages subscriptions for us, tell us whether you have an active subscription and its history (start, renewals, trial, cancellation).

Why: to unlock Crumbs+ for you. Legal basis: performance of our contract with you.

Usage analytics

We use an analytics service to understand how the app is used, so we can improve it: for example which onboarding steps people complete, when a paywall is shown, and which settings people change. These events are linked to your random account ID, not to your name or email. The service derives an approximate location (country, region) from your IP address. We don’t record what you type, the words you look up, or your answers.

Why: to improve the app. Legal basis: our legitimate interest in improving the app (FADP; GDPR Art. 6(1)(f)).

Crash reports

If the app crashes, a crash reporting service sends us a report with technical details: the device model, operating system, app version, and what went wrong, linked to your random account ID.

Why: to fix bugs. Legal basis: our legitimate interest in a working app.

Feedback

When you send feedback in the app, we store your message with your account ID, the app version, your platform and the language you learn, and forward it to us through a private messaging channel so we can read it quickly.

Why: to read and act on your feedback. Legal basis: your consent (you send it).

This website

This website doesn’t use cookies or analytics. Our hosting provider processes your IP address to deliver the pages and may keep it briefly in server logs for security.

No ads, no selling

We don’t sell your data, and we don’t use it for advertising. The app doesn’t track you across other apps or websites. If this ever changes, we’ll update this policy and ask for your permission where required.

Who processes data for us

We use a few carefully chosen service providers, who process data only on our behalf and under data processing agreements:

Most of these providers are based in, or store data in, the USA. Where data goes to the USA, it is protected by the EU–US and Swiss–US Data Privacy Frameworks, where the provider is certified, or by the European Commission’s standard contractual clauses.

How long we keep it

We keep your account data as long as you have an account. You can delete your account at any time in the app (Settings → Delete account). This deletes your account and your learning data from our servers immediately; backups are overwritten within 7 days. Analytics events are kept for 24 months and crash reports for 90 days. We keep purchase records as long as the law requires.

Your rights

You can ask us for a copy of your data, to correct it, to delete it, to receive it in a portable format, and to restrict or object to how we use it. Where we rely on your consent, you can withdraw it at any time. Write to support@readcrumbs.app.

You also have the right to complain to a data protection authority: in Switzerland the Federal Data Protection and Information Commissioner (FDPIC), in the EU the authority of your country.

Children

Crumbs is not directed at children under 13, and we don’t knowingly collect data from them. If you believe a child has given us data, contact us and we’ll delete it.

Changes

If we change this policy, we’ll update the date above. For important changes, we’ll let you know in the app.
